My life got off to a rocky start when my mother set me afloat down the Nile in a bulrush basket. Fortunately, My twin and I were discovered in the reeds by a noble she-wolf who raised us until we left for some adventures (I forget what exactly, though I remember something about a tiff with my brother) and ended up founding a really awesome city renowned for its pioneering work in civil engineering. Oh yes, and I’m the only (and secret) surviving member of a royal family slaughtered by Bolsheviks.
I’m actually just the product of a small Western town and lots and lots of trips to the library, as well as early and intensive exposure to television. An overactive imagination and a motley career path -- including field worker, legal secretary, store clerk, newsweekly editor, and bookkeeper, with a BA in creative writing and philosophy thrown somewhere in the middle -- has provided plenty of grist for my writing mill. I share my palace with my husband, Paul.
What people usually want to know about me is how to pronounce my last name. Since the question has come up ever since I've been old enough to pronounce the name myself, I don't get too shook up. So in case you're wondering, "BAY-tee-uh" is pretty close.
Email correspondence, questions, book recommendations, grammar help and offers of vintage stationery are perennially welcome.
